Polyphasic Sleep, Day 22 - Friday, 3/31/2006

April 3, 2006 at 3:09 am (Polyphasic Sleep, Productive Late-Nights)

My midnight nap goes swimmingly, though I am a bit groggy when I wake up. That passes though, and I settle into some late-night workin’. All goes well, and my 4 am nap is fine too. I’m slightly more tired when I wake up though, hrm. I’ve timed the morning out so that I can make it to group meeting on time - take my 8 AM nap slightly early (7:45), up at 8:10, shower, get to my car at 8:40, catch the 9:12 train from 22nd street, and get off a stop early in Menlo Park, where I left my bicycle the night before. I bike to campus, getting there at 10:15 - plenty of time til my 11 AM group meeting. I split some HeLa cells, and realize that I am quite sleepy. The cycle has come around, and today I am not as chipper as I would like. Group meeting runs past noon, and I have a hard time keeping my eyes open. As soon as we are done, I head upstairs to nap. I crash hard, falling asleep immediately. I also have trouble waking up, though I do manage to get up while the 1-minute timer alarm is ringing. I finish out the week working on the phosphorylation project until Zach is ready to go. It is pouring rain, so I gratefully accept a ride back to San Francisco, leaving my bike at the lab.

At home I grab a quick bite and take my 8 PM nap. This goes fine, and I pick up Scotty Barnard and we go to a comedy improv show at Canvas in the inner sunset. Show is fine, but we’re more concerned with catching up since it has been WAY too long since we last saw each other. Especially considering we now live 2 blocks away from each other. No, not 2 looooong blocks. After the show I drop him off and head back home. I have a slight headache from the one beer I had at the show, which I try to stave off with a couple glasses of water. My midnight nap gets pushed a bit because of the headache, but I finally get into bed at 12:30.

Polyphasic Sleep, Day 20 - Wednesday, 3/29/2006

March 31, 2006 at 3:44 am (Polyphasic Sleep, Productive Late-Nights)

Today was much more poly-successful. I nap at midnight, and am up and back at it. 4 AM doesn’t phase me either - 25 minutes and then back up and reving my engine. I decide I’m going to reformat my computer to WinXP. I already have a Win2000 machine, so my dual-processor machine will be my potential gaming/memory intensive application machine. Photoshop, Premiere, Maya, things like that. It has 2 GB of memory, so can handle things a TON better than my single processory machine with 768 MB RAM. Oooh, tech-speak. I’m sure you’re all drooling now. I also continue the tech part of my research - parsing a file of Phosphorylation sites in embryonic mouse brain proteins. YUM, more geeky fun.

At 8 AM I nap again, get up, and shower. I decide to work from home today, as it is POURING out, and I also have some things to do in SF. I work until 11, then go to DHL and pick up a hard drive I ordered. Then my noon nap, and then off to Big O tires, where I drop some cash on fixing the flat tire I got on Monday and getting everything aligned. Amusing story - while ordering a (decaf!) mocha at the coffee shop across the street where I waited for the tire repairs to be done, the guy behind the counter asked me if “this was my hair,” indicating … my hair! I inquired as to whose hair he thought it might be, and he said it looked like a hat - “like one of those russian hats they wear in russia, or mongolia, or somewhere very cold.” I replied that it was indeed my own hair, and that my russian ancestors would be proud. Weird. :-)
Was also able to get more work done in the 90 minutes I waited there (yay 12″ powerbook).

I make it home on my new tire, and take my 4 PM nap. All’s well. More work until it is time to go over to Stephanie and Dina’s for LOST. Doug and I go over there, picking Stephanie up at Safeway on the way over. I take my 8 PM nap a bit late - 8:45. But it goes well, and then LOST is pretty good. Back home, and some puttering around until my midnight nap.
